Intravenous or general Anesthesia Sedation instructions
Please follow these instructions to prepare for oral surgery with intravenous or general anesthesia:
- The patient scheduled to have IV Sedation or General Anesthesia should not eat or drink for six (6) hours prior to surgery, unless otherwise instructed.
- All patients who are sedated must be accompanied by a responsible adult who is required to remain in our lobby during the procedure and drive the patient home. Normally office procedures are short, about 2 hours, and usually there is little delay before the patient is ready to leave the office.
- Patients under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. If you have guardianship, you must bring legal documents to the appointment showing you are the legal guardian.
- Following sedation, patients can not drive a vehicle, operate dangerous machinery, or undertake responsible business matters for 24 hours.
- If you are under the regular care of a physician for a medical condition such as diabetes, heart disease, etc., which was not discussed when you made your appointment, please call this office, as this may affect your surgery.
- Prescription medications should be taken at their normal intervals with a sip of water. Patients taking insulin or oral diabetes medications, or who are on any blood thinners, should call the office for specific instructions. All patients should bring a complete list of medications they are taking, and the dosages.
- Please bring with you any x-rays your dental office may have taken recently, or contact their office and have them mail them to us before your appointment.
- Patients who wear hard contact lenses should leave them out, or bring along their lens case and remove them prior to surgery. Patients are requested to remove nail polish prior to surgery. Patients are required to have all facial piercings removed prior to surgery.
- Patients should wear loose fitting clothing to permit access where anesthesia is administered at the level of the elbow area.
- If you develop a cold or fever prior to your surgery, please contact our office.
- Please note all consultations are fee based. Typically during a consultation a CT Scan will be taken, this is also assessed a fee. If you have insurance, we will file a claim for these fees, and any amount not covered by insurance is the patient’s responsibility.
- The patient’s procedure could be cancelled by your surgeon if the above instructions are not followed, or other factors become evident to the surgeon that would compromise the safety of the patient.
