Top Tips for a Smooth Recovery After Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth removal is a common procedure, often performed during late adolescence or early adulthood. While the thought of having your wisdom teeth removed might seem daunting, knowing what to expect and how to care for yourself afterward can make the recovery process much smoother. At River Ridge Oral Surgery, we’re committed to ensuring your comfort and a speedy recovery. Here are our top tips for a smooth recovery after wisdom teeth removal:

1. Follow Your Surgeon’s Instructions Carefully: This is the most crucial tip! Your oral surgeon will provide you with detailed post-operative instructions tailored to your specific case. These instructions will cover everything from pain management to oral hygiene. Adhering to these guidelines is paramount for preventing complications and promoting healing. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact our office at 605-331-5059.

2. Manage Pain Effectively: It’s normal to experience some discomfort after wisdom teeth removal. Your surgeon may prescribe pain medication to help manage this. Take the medication as directed, and don’t wait until the pain becomes severe before taking it. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, may also be recommended. For more information on anesthesia and pain management, you can review our Anesthesia page.

3. Control Bleeding: Some bleeding is expected in the first few hours after surgery. Your surgeon will place gauze pads over the extraction sites. Change the gauze pads as instructed, and apply gentle pressure. If bleeding persists or becomes excessive, please contact our office immediately.

4. Eat Soft Foods: For the first few days after your procedure, stick to a diet of soft foods that require minimal chewing. Good options include:
  • Smoothies
  • Yogurt
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Soups
  • Jell-O
  • Pudding
As you heal, you can gradually reintroduce more solid foods. Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods that could irritate the extraction sites.

5. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of fluids is essential for healing. Water is always a good choice. Avoid using straws for the first few days, as the sucking motion can dislodge blood clots and lead to a painful condition called dry socket.

6. Practice Good Oral Hygiene: Keeping your mouth clean is vital for preventing infection. Gently rinse your mouth with salt water as directed by your surgeon. Be careful not to swish too vigorously, especially in the first few days. You can begin brushing your teeth gently after 24 hours, but avoid brushing the extraction sites directly. For more detailed post-operative instructions, please see our Post-Operative Instructions page.

7. Rest and Relax: Getting plenty of rest is crucial for your body to heal. Avoid strenuous activities for several days after your surgery. Listen to your body, and don’t push yourself too hard.

8. Apply Ice Packs: Applying ice packs to the outside of your jaw can help reduce swelling and discomfort. Apply ice for 15-20 minutes at a time, several times a day, especially during the first 24-48 hours.

9. Elevate Your Head: When resting or sleeping, elevate your head with pillows. This can help minimize swelling.

10. Know the Signs of Complications: While complications are rare, it’s essential to be aware of the signs. Contact our office immediately if you experience:
  • Severe pain that is not relieved by medication
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Swelling that worsens after the third day
  • Fever
  • Numbness in the tongue, lip, or chin
  • Foul-tasting or smelling discharge from the extraction site
